New Miami Magazine
New Miami was South Florida's premiere business and life style magazine.
Founded in 1989, it quickly earned a reputation as the must read magazine for anyone doing business in Miami or Latin America. From Fortune 100 CEOs to mail room clerks, New Miami's diverse subscriber base helped the publication blossom from a wannabe into a trend setter in South Florida's burgeoning corporate arena. Within its first six months, the magazine's circulation jumped from a measly 10,000 subscribers to 50,000 (BPA audited). It would later go on to surpass 100,000 monthly readers.
Newman
joined the team in December 1989, during his last year in college, as an
editorial assistant. And it didn't take long for
his star to shine. In March 1990, just four months after joining the
magazine, Newman
The following year he was rewarded with three more Florida Magazine Association awards for excellence in writing and earned a double promotion -- first to the position of Associate Editor and then to that of Managing Editor. He also played a pivotal role in redesigning and revamping the magazine and its editorial focus.
He also gave the publication its top selling issue in July 1992, when he challenged the conservative mindset of both the magazine's editorial board and the South Florida business community with the then risqué cover story, "Gay In Corporate Miami." That issue sold out in less than a month. Unfortunately, no one could predict the devastation and destruction that would soon hit Miami's economy in the form of a little storm known as Hurricane Andrew. Advertisers pulled their ad dollars out of what they perceived to be "luxury" buys and focused their budgets on local newspapers and quick fixes. By 1993, the deep pockets of New Miami's single owner were starting to feel the pinch.
With an hour's notice, and much difficulty, the plug was pulled on New Miami in August of that year, with the final issue hitting newsstands a month later.
